There’s an old poem I read growing up and it stuck with me….(I’m not sure who the author is):
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and debts are high,
And you want to Smile but have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won if he’d stuck it out,
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown,
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
Life is hard, we all know that. Sometimes, we go through hard times that last so long that we wonder if that’s all our story will be. And sometimes…..we want to quit. We want to throw in the towel and walk away, because it’s just too hard and we can’t do it anymore and we’ve messed up again, and what’s the point of even trying? We yell it out in frustration or we whisper it, with tears running down our faces and our hands and hearts covered in cuts and bruises……”I want to quit”.
I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve had to fight the urge to quit……I’m still fighting it. So this is for me as much as I write it to you…….don’t give up….whatever it is. Don’t quit. Don’t lose sight of what you’re going after. Don’t lose hope in your dreams, no matter how outrageous they seem. Don’t stop working for what you want, even if it doesn’t look like you’re making progress. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it might get harder. Yes, some obstacles look impossible. Yes, sometimes your strength runs out and you get tired and you just need a break and does it have to be so darn hard??? But whatever it is you’re working for….it’s worth it. It’s worth the pain, it’s worth the effort, it’s worth the tears, it’s worth the struggle. Keep going. Keep pushing. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Keep doing the next thing, no matter how hard it is. You’ll make it.
So before I wrap up this week’s blog post, I’m going take a moment to celebrate because…..
The blog turns 1 today!
It’s been a year of learning how to be consistent, to write even when I didn’t quite have the words. I have processed through difficult topics on the blog, and through it I have found words for my feelings, and strength to keep fighting through the hard days.
Thank you for reading, thank you for sharing, and thank you for your encouragement; your words are my fuel. I hope to keep writing for many years to come.
